Banded Basics, Apr 13th – 1-3:30pm
Learn the basics of controlled mobility. How to control your end range, create stability in all poses and movements, and develop tension within your body using your own deep stability system. There will be isolated core work, exploration and execution of “basic” yoga postures that are practiced in almost every vinyasa or hatha style yoga class (ex. tadasana, down dog, plank), and emphasis on stacking the body/bones for optimal function and efficiency in movement and breathing. Using the therabands as props for our poses, we will shed awareness and light to the areas in which we are underworking or disconnected to using the reference point of the bands for our own tensegrity.
Raveling & Unraveling Your Hips & Twists, Apr 14th – 1:00-3:30pm
Many of us have or may experience lower back, sacral, or hip joint pain during the course of our lives or in and with our movement practices. In the yoga practice with all of our forward bending, lunging, twisting, and “hip opening”, the risk of something running awry with how we are practicing and causing pain in these areas is quite common. This class will help you understand how to find YOUR neutral pelvis and femur (or thigh bone) centered within its socket and how to strengthen the areas around the hip joint to create more stability with mobility around the pelvis. We will dive into discussions of allowing the pelvis to twist or not in twisting postures, and the benefits of both. Using the bands, we will access our super-important hip joint rotator cuff, core twisting muscles, and powerful glutes. These concepts allow optimal stability and control through the vast ranges of motion that can occur within the hip and pelvis.
Tensegrity refers to the expansive space we create in our own bodies to optimize movement, joint and muscle health. Tensegrity creates ease and light in yoga asana and in life. Expanding in all directions during movement is how we achieve tensegrity.
Using therabands in a variety of yoga postures and corrective exercises, you will learn how to achieve maximum tensegrity, expansion, and stability through mobility.
Therabands provide excellent tactile external feedback and resistance for the body and muscles to push and pull against, which sends valuable learning signals to the brain to grow from. The bands give us boundaries and help us to strengthen in our end ranges. We activate more passive tissues and connect the dots of our own web.
The therabands mimic what is happening inside the body: the interrelationships between the bones that float inside the soft tissue and are held by the muscles and fascia.
In these workshops, you will learn how to use and move your body differently and more efficiently IMMEDIATELY.
Each class will start with a brief explanation of the concepts we will explore through practice. We will start slow, and build upon a foundation of optimal movement patterns and awareness.
Expect to wear therabands for all poses in the movement sequences and connect with your body somatically to harness control of your movements and learn about your limits.
We will use the bands as accommodating lines of resistance against which to generate force for creating tensile strength and stability with mobility.
About Giulia! After years of dance, yoga, and both stress & trauma related physical injuries, I realized that my own practice and teaching needed something more functional. As a Physiyoga™ teacher, my group classes and workshops combine corrective exercises and knowledge from the physical therapy world with and around asana to not only challenge the ways in which we move, but to shed light on how we can create more efficiency and clarity in our individual mechanics, as well as heal and prevent some future injuries and pains.
We will move through and deconstruct asana and vinyasa using therabands that will be looped, tied, and pulled around our movement to introduce a whole new web of possibility for length, strength, expansion and awareness in the way in which we practice.
